The abstract nature of the term sustainability is somewhat difficult to comprehend. Everyone has their own definition which describes their unique stance on the subject.

Australia's National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development (1992) defines ecologically sustainable development as: 'using, conserving and enhancing the community's resources so that ecological processes, on which life depends, are maintained, and the total quality of life, now and in the future, can be increased'.

At Oasis, the engineering of sustainability in our business is driven by three main factors: climate change, environmental quality and financial security. The list could be much longer however we think our focus should be on achievable goals rather than becoming overwhelmed.

The adverse affects of climate change are a consequence of our society. Our business has taken steps to reduce energy consumption in many ways. We participate in programs conducted by the Department of Sustainability and Environment to learn more about how to reduce our specific impact on the environment.

We also participate in projects that involve ESD programs for energy conservation such as Glen Eira Sports & Aquatic Centre.  The innovative InTeM thermal insulative composite is evidence of our desire to proactively influence real and beneficial change.

We recycle in excess of 98% of waste raw materials used in the production process, and we actively participate in PVC recycling programs such as Vinyloop and Texyloop offered by Ferrari; and Eco-care offered by Mehler.

The European REACH directive (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) was introduced to eliminate hazardous substances used in architectural fabrics such as SVHC-CMR, PBT and vPvB. Oasis is mindful of this directive when making fabric selection's for tensile structures.
