Melbourne Park

Melbourne Park is one of Australia’s premium sporting and entertainment venues. Rod Laver Arena is one of four major facilities within the precinct and is the home of the Australian Open. Many other entertainment events are hosted there.

Oasis was contracted by Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust to design and construct a coated fabric structure located on a northern platform of Rod Laver Arena

This barrel vault structure covers the concourse terrace to provide all weather protection to an outdoor entertainment and eating area. Hiraoka 102-T2 fabric was chosen for this project and the steelwork is protected by a high gloss polyurethane paint system.

Part of the challenge was to ensure the new structure didn’t inhibit natural light from reaching a sloping glass roof on the abuttiing wall. A 3D model was created to check the shadow patterns at specified times and dates.

The players gym consists of an indoor and outdoor covered area. These photos were taken prior to completion and hence miss some of the the finished items such as wall screens, flooring and a myriad of fitness equipment. However they do convey an effiecient use of the space between the main facilities building and a portable structure over practice courts. Highly translucent PVC material together with clear glazing between the building and fabric structure were used to maximise the level of natural light.
